Novels are detailed looks at the inner lives of characters and how they handle conflict. The value in studying novels is that we gain insight into how other people think about, act, and react to situations. In doing so, we also think about our values and what we might do in another person's situation. This helps us to build our capacity for empathy and contributes to better social relationships in our community. In other words, we learn about ourselves by studying others; we learn about others by studying ourselves.
