Essay and Test
Choose a topic from the list below and write a well-developed, edited and proofread essay. Your essay will be a synthesis essay, meaning you must address at least two stories in your answer. I will discuss how to do this in class.
Essay Topics:
Essay Topics:
- Discuss the nature of evil, as described in "The Book of Sand" and "North End Faust".
- Evaluate the protagonist's dilemma in "Internal Monologue...Havana" and "On the Rainy River". Whose situation is more dire?
- Compare and contrast the use of first-person perspective in "Boys and Girls" and "Borders". How does the use of first-person perspective create literary effects for the audience?
- Compare and contrast the use of irony and its effect on the audience in any two (or more) of the stories we have studied.
- With reference to any two (or more) of the stories we have read, discuss the impact of symbolism on readers. What purpose does it serve?
Unit Test - Your Unit test will ask you to read a story you are unfamiliar with and apply literary terms to demonstrate your understanding of the story. It is expected that you will know all the terms on the study guide and be able to recognize them in a story. You should also be able to comment on their effect on the reader. You will also need to make connections between stories we have read and the story on your test.
The format of the test will be a combination of multiple choice and written response, and will mirror the structure of the Provincial Exam.
